you're gonna see the reason why when they're spittin' in your eye they'll be spittin' in your eye

Just read this on CNN.

And Georgia wonders why it's ranked dead last in education.

(Just an FYI, I have things to post about, but my stolen wireless has been spotty. Hopefully it'll become more stable.)

Ugh.

I have to say, though, that I took a "Bible as Literature" course in college as part of my English Lit. degree and it was awesome! Not that I think Georgia would do that, but if the Bible were presented as a literary work and not a religious text, it could be a good thing for kids to learn about history and the Bible's context within it. But, again, I really don't trust Georgia schools to take such a secular approach.

Yeah, I agree with the option of teaching the Bible as an important historical text that has formed so much of our society, in the 'non-devotional manner' that the quoted person suggested, and it being en elective is fine. Hell, I might even take that class if offered to me, just like I might take a Torah or Shakespeare or Constitution class, (I'm an atheist, if it matters), but, like Laurie says, I really don't trust Georgia to be that intellectual and non-biased as they say they would be. I think it's a fascinating work, but, it's a work, done by men. It has it's place and it's history, but, it's no coincidence that a Bible-thumping southern state choose to focus on that work, and not any others that have had just as great an impact upon our society.

I just found your blog and boy did THIS post hit home. I thought I was the only one who was slightly outraged when I read that in the news.
