ooh ahh sock it to me like you want to oh
Well, here's a picture of the Holey Sock last night at about 8 PM: and here's a blurry but detailed closeup of the holes in the heel but I finished the sock last night and I did some sort of mojo to sew up the holes only now there's a ridge in the sock, fuck me, these were for a gift, what do I do now? I shall start on another project whilst I humbly await your advice.

What Janice said. Also, try knitting those stitches through the back loops.
Now I see why I couldn't possibly win the contest, I don't know that guy.
If you are doing the wrapped short rows, when you are knitting the second half of the heel, make sure that when you reach the first unworked wrapped stitch in the row, that you knit the stitch and the wrap together. That should eliminate any holes. I forgot to do that with my first sock, and ended up with gaping holes in my heels.
Hope that helps!
I'm for picking up those stitches through the back loop as well. It makes a nice twisty, decorative thingy. Really, it does. Heck, get frisky and pick up through both loops ;-P Oh, and just pick up an extra or two at the beginning & decrease them the next time around. That's the other place I have gap issues if I'm not paying attention very well.
It would make a nice AK-47 magazine cover, for the mujahadeen on your list!!
